What Does an Encoder Do?

When it comes to motion—speed, distance and direction—feedback systems, encoders of one type or another are typically at the core of the operation. Put simply, they record movement metrics and communicate them in a way that a control system and/or person can use to adjust or monitor. Encoders are critical components in all kinds of mechanical systems. They are especially prevalent in industrial settings where large machinery performs repeatable tasks, high-precision prototyping or delicate work. Generally, encoders all do the same things, but the technology they use to do it can vary. These variations usually have the most impact on the detail and amount of feedback they provide. There can also be differences in how encoders are constructed based on the environments they are intended for.     Use our "Encoder Selection Tool"   Read about Heidenhain Encoders

High precision encoders both exposed and sealed

MSA 170

DALATEC'S DESIGN AND ENGINEERING CAPABILITY IN COLLABORATION WITH RSF ELEKTRONIK OF AUSTRIA TO PROVIDE YOU WITH BOTH SEALED AND EXPOSED LINEAR ENCODERS. Sealed linear encoders are suitable for use in applications which demand a high level of precision and efficiency despite harsh conditions including coolant and lubricant ingress or soiling by shavings, filings or dust.  Linear encoders are used in very harsh environments and utilize methods of extra protection (IP 64) beyond the sealed unit´s standard set of sealing lips. Dalatec can supply you with a wide variety of sealed encoders from the miniturized system MSA 170 to systems with robust housings like the MSA 35x series both shown below.         Increasing requirements in today's motion control applications ask for high-precision exposed linear encoder systems. This is driven by steadily increasing demands for higher traversing speed, higher operating cycles, lower mechanical backlash and zero frictional force induced by...
